the 2014 nfl draft as told by a female

Having gone to a SEC school, football runs pretty deep in my veins. I have my favorite NFL teams that I enjoy watching, or attempting to keep up with, every Sunday in the fall. So it's no surprise that I want to do a blog post on the 2014 NFL Draft that took place last night, and how I feel about certain picks, players, and teams. Let's go through some highlights.

  • 1st pick: Texans select Jadeveon Clowney - This really came as no surprise to me. If you haven't seen Clowney's hit he put on Michigan in 2013, you must be living under a rock. This bro deserved the #1 pick. (He also had this hit against my beloved Vols but let's not go there.)
  • 3rd pick: Jags select Blake Bortles - This pick really set me off. I would've really loved to see Bortles go to the Vikings at the 8th pick. The Jags and the Vikings were two teams who really needed QBs. Many were surprised that Johnny Manziel (aka Johnny Football) wasn't the first QB picked in the draft (let's be honest, I was too). On the bright side for Bortles, he's only going a few hours up the road from his Alma mater. You can bet the kind of fan base he'll get in Jacksonville.
  • 6th pick: Falcons select Jake Matthews - This was pretty clutch for the Falcons. We really needed some protection on our O line and I think Matthews will be a great fit here in Atlanta. He's also coming to ATL from a SEC school (A&M) so welcome homie.
  • 8th pick: Browns select Justin Gilbert - This pick is pretty irrelevant to me but it was pretty funny to hear Roger Goodell pronunciate the "J" and make the crowd think it was Manziel going 8th. LOLZ
  • 9th pick: Vikings select Anthony Barr - I really don't know much about Barr, but like I said above, I truly believe the Vikings would've taken Bortles here if he had still been available. I'm glad to see them not pick up Manziel through. Good luck to Barr here, seems like a good fit. He's from Cali too so hangloose bro.
  • 19th pick: Dolphins select Ja-Wuan James - VOLS. That is all.
  • 21st pick: Packers select Ha Ha Clinton-Dix - Nope, you read that right. His name is "Ha Ha Clinton-Dix". Again, don't know a ton about him other than that he tore up Tennessee's offense when we played Bama. I just like his name.
  • 22nd pick: Browns select Johnny Manziel - FINALLY. I can go to bed now. Let's talk about how I really feel about Johnny Football though. I straight up don't like the guy. This comes pretty standard though as I really don't like any cocky athletes (think T.O. and Richard Sherman). You can be as good as you want but I can't cockiness. Let's grow up gentlemen. Be thankful for where you're at in your career and strive to be better. Johnny Football is cocky. He's also all about famous people, rappers, athletes; you name it, he's got an in. That's great for him. Maybe I'm just jealous. I'd love to see Manziel make things for himself. I find it frustrating seeing Nike and other people already signing him for endorsement deals when he just finished his sophomore year in college and is barely legal to have a beer. What if he turns out like Tebow? I'm just saying, it would be nice to see him publicly appreciate the things he has in his life a little more. But whatevs, I'm just jealous.
  • 32nd pick: Vikings select Teddy Bridgewater - And there's our QB. Christian Ponder couldn't get the job done for the Vikes last year, so I'm happy to see someone like Bridgewater join the roster. He seemed to drop down the ratings list prior to the draft, but I'm confident he could be the missing piece the Vikings are looking for.
Lastly, rumors are flying around the the Falcons may be looking to trade their second round pick for...wait for it...ERIC BERRY. You know what that means. A VFL on the Falcons! Dreams do come true! Fingers crossed on that one.

Overall, the SEC has the most first round NFL draft picks with 11, making the SEC the best conference, right? :)
Happy weekend!
